United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
The UNHCR was founded in 1950, during the aftermath of WW2, in an attempt to help refugees that resulted from the catastrophes of the war.
More than half of UNHCR refugees come from Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Syria.
Around 89% of UNHCR staff are on the ground in the countries fueling the surge in refugees.
They are located in 126 countries, providing aid to roughly 59 million displaced peoples.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)
The IRC was founded upon Albert Einstein’s request in response to WW2. American leaders and intellectuals, including Eleanor Roosevelt and John Dos Passos, became involved with the IRC.
The IRC provides aid to displaced peoples in 40 countries
They also help resettle refugees in 26 U.S. cities.
The IRC helps resettled refugees to become self-sufficient in their new homes.
Through direct and political action, the IRC advocated for the economic wellbeing, education, empowerment, health, and safety of refugees.
The IRC also specifically advocates for the rights and of women and girls
The latest IRC report displays the organization’s extensive list of accomplishments, including providing 1.6 million children with schooling and education opportunities.

Organization for Refuge, Asylum, and Migration (ORAM)
Oram was founded in 2008 as the only refugee aid organization dedicated to advocating for the LGBTQI+ refugee community.
ORAM specifically targets sexual and gender minorities, children, victims of rape, pregnant women, victims of human trafficking, disabled people, elderly people, and those with life threatening illnesses in the refugee community.
ORAM protects individual refugees through legal work, providing guidance and legal consultation.
ORAM provides online information and a helpline for refugees and supports livelihood and empowerment projects, specifically for LGBTQI+ Kenyan people.

Islamic Relief
Islamic Relief was founded in 1984 in the UK and is a faith-based organization that provides relief to refugees across the globe “regardless of race, religion or gender.”
Islamic Relief has offices in 40 countries including Afghanistan, Palestine, and the United States.
Islamic Relief has 25 refugee aid programs in the U.S., Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East
They also have programs for education, food aid, emergency response, health, microfinance, livelihood, water, orphans and children, winter aid, and womens’ programs.
Islamic Relief efforts reach more than 165,000 refugees around the world.

Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS)
HIAS was founded in 1881 in an effort to assist Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe. HIAS was born from a group of Russian-American Jews at a store in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. In 2000, HIAS expanded to provide refugee aid to non-Jews as well as Jews and now provides aid to many countries around the world.
HIAS provides legal protection to refugees.
These programs work to ensure that refugees know their rights, can access protective services, and can navigate legal systems.
HIAS provides psychological care to refugees.
These programs implement community-based psychological services that empower refugees to care for themselves and others. They help refugees address grief, isolation, and fear that result from traumas they have experienced.
HIAS has livelihood programs.
These programs help refugees access economic opportunities to earn sustainable incomes by providing training in, business, finance, management, technology, and more.
